Lawyer Coaching and Mentoring

Lawyer coaching is becoming popular as a strategy for success. Lawyers have become aware of the benefits of having a confidential, open space in which to ask questions and process their ideas. In law school, students gain the knowledge and experience that will, ideally, enable them to flourish in any firm or practice. However, after graduation, legal professionals are left to navigate the specifics of the working world on their own. Many face questions like:

  • How can I keep up in the competitive environment at my law firm to achieve my career goals?
  • What can I do to communicate more effectively with a difficult boss / colleague / paralegal / client?
  • How can I best practice law in a way that aligns with my values?
  • I want to have a family and personal life beyond my work – what are the best ways to find balance?
  • Do I have what it takes to start my own law practice?

Individuals seeking lawyer coaching may also take on leadership roles within their organization. Even when the desire to lead is strong, the methods for becoming a skillful leader are often less clear.

Skillful Leadership Starts With Self-knowledge

Too often, leadership development is outwardly focused and emphasizes influencing and directing others to achieve organizational goals. The status quo narrowly defines success in terms of the “bottom line,” often at the expense of people and the environment. Many people want to adopt leadership styles that are less ego-centric and more compassionate; less “law shark” and more servant-leader. Those who desire to step into these roles seek to make a difference, but find that they need additional skills to navigate the increasing challenges of a complex world.

Regardless of where you are in your law career, it is possible to find satisfaction and to become a wise, conscious and skillful leader. By gaining deeper insight into your own complex personality patterns, your strengths and growth opportunities, you can fully embrace your innate leadership potential and advance your professional and personal goals.

Why Seek Lawyer Coaching?

Participation in experienced, thoughtful coaching and mentoring helps you gain personal insight and develop tools and strategies that align with who you are. With this knowledge, you will grow as a wise, conscious legal professional and leader who responds confidently to the challenges that arise in your professional and personal life. Professional knowledge and skills are important, but they are often overemphasized during professional training to the detriment of personal growth. However, understanding who you are and what you bring empowers you to use your learned and natural abilities in thoughtful and effective ways.

What to Expect as a Client

The initial consultation session is an opportunity to discuss your needs and how we can best support you. Early in the process, our clients complete an Enneagram questionnaire. The Enneagram is a typological, teaching and self-development tool used in a variety of fields including business, law, conflict resolution and psychology. Thalia uses it as an assessment framework to provide a starting point for expanding self-awareness.

In Thalia’s approach to mentoring and coaching, there is no preconceived agenda for each meeting. Instead, coaches respond to client needs in the moment and as they evolve between sessions. Throughout the lawyer coaching and mentoring process, Thalia aims to create the conditions in which you can gain personal insight and integrate your new awareness into your broader personal and professional goals.
